  • Handbuilding ceramics

    Hand build it.

Hand building invovles creating pots and sculptures without the use of a wheel, using your hands and simple tools.

The most common techniques are pinch pottery, coiling, and slab building.

We offer instruction and guidance in handbuilding in our weekly classes, allowing you to develop your own projects after mastery of the basic techniques.

  • Wheel made pottery

    Wheel throw it.

This is where all the magic happens - at our Potter’s Wheel, featuring our Master Potter, Edson.

There’s something so relaxing about getting your hands involved and full of clay.

Not only is Edson a highly skilled potter who can turn anything on a wheel. He is also the most patient, skilled teacher who has the ability to turn beginners into competent throwers in weeks.

  • Underglazing a pot

    Decorate it.

Whether you prefer simple or complex designs, there are endless ways to decorate your pottery and make each piece truly unique.

Techniques from stamping to stencilling and sgraffito are all options to make your pots shine.

You are able to underglaze, use slip, brush or dip to glaze your items and get a variety of finishes on your projects.

What happens if I can’t attend a class?

Classes are not charged at a pro-rata rate and missed classes can be made up at your convenience but cannot be offset against the current or following month’s fees. Please contact us to arrange for a time slot for your makeup class.

What type of clay do you use?

Our studio makes use of light and terra cotta earthenware clay (low-fire).

We unfortunately don’t accommodate stoneware or porcelain.

What is included in the classes?

Your class fees include tuition, clay, the use of the equipment and tools, bisque and glaze firing of items.

What equipment is available in the studio?

We have six wheels, a slab roller, pugged clay, various drape moulds and a variety of tools to assist you in completing your projects.

What does it cost?

All Things Clay students are charged R2200 per month for morning or evening classes. These fees are inclusive of all materials - clay, glaze and firings.

Fees are payable via EFT, Cash or Credit Card.

Is there a per session fee?

If students cannot commit to attending pottery classes on a monthly basis, they have the option to pay for each class individually. The cost for each class is R600.

However, it is recommended that you attend multiple classes as pottery involves a process of creating, bisque firing, decoration, and finishing. Therefore, it is not possible to complete a pottery project after just one class.

Can I do a once-off class or do a Date Night?

Should you want to do a once-off class or a Date Night, we have a two session requirement. The cost of this option is R900 per person. That is R600 for the first night to create work, R300 for a second session to decorate what you have made.

What happens when I can’t attend classes anymore?

One month’s notice is required should you be unable to continue attending classes.

How long will it take before I can take home my work?

The length of time it takes for you to receive your completed work depends on several factors, including the drying time, bisque firing, glazing, and glaze firing. Generally, each of these processes takes around a week to complete.

Overall, you should expect to wait around 3-4 weeks to receive your completed work, depending on the speed that you work at, the size and complexity of the piece, as well as the current workload of the studio. If you have any questions or concerns about the timing of your order, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.
